SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SENIORS

1.Babson College – Weissman Scholarship Program.  Full Tuition over $170,000.  Targeting students in the top 5% of their graduating class.  Intended business majors and community leaders.  Visit www.weissmanscholars.org for additional information. 

2.Capitol College Merit Scholarship.  Nine Full ride Scholarships are available for students interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Computer Science majors.  Minimum requirements:  3.0 GPA and 1100 SAT math/verbal.  Deadline:  Earlier you apply the greater your chances.

3.Washington College.  $50,000 Scholarship.  Intended for National Honor Society Members.  Visit www.washcoll.edu for additional information.

4.SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes.  $1,000 Scholarship for HS seniors.  Free to enter and eligibility not based on GPA or financial need.  Fifteen chances to win – one winner every two weeks from October – May.  Apply online at http://offtocollege.info/ beginning September 14th – March 14th.

5.Burger King Scholars.  $1,000 Scholarship.  Requirement:  2.5 GPA, work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need, and plan to enroll in an accredited two/four year college or university.  Application process begins September 14th – February 2nd.

6.Horatio Alger Scholarship for students with a 2.0 GPA or higher.  Deadline October 30th.

7.Horatio Alger District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia Scholarship Program.  Twenty-five (25) $2,500 Scholarships Awarded.  Deadline October 30th.

8.Coca-Cola Scholarship.  Scholars are selected based upon academic achievement, their capacity to lead, and their hours of dedicated community service.  250 awards are presented annually with 50 scholarships for $20,000 and 200 scholarships for $10,000.  Visit www.coca-colascholars.org  Deadline:  October 31st.

9.Boston College Presidential Scholarship.  Full-tuition scholarship program.  Intended for students of outstanding talent and character who strive to become leaders with integrity and vision.  There is no minimum GPA or SAT score requirement.  Candidates must apply Early Action Deadline of November 1st.

10.Howard University Freshman Scholarship Program.  Presidential, Laureate, Founders, Capstone and Legacy Scholarship.  Ranging from Tuition & Fees – Full Ride.  Recognizes outstanding academic achievement and leadership for freshman.  Deadline:  November 1st Early Action or February 15th Traditional Action.

11.Emory University Scholars.  Range from 2/3 to full tuition.  Intended for students who have outstanding records of academic achievement, who possess extraordinary personal qualities, and who have mad significant contributions to their class, their school, and their community.  Nomination Deadline: November 1st.

12.Emory University Goizueta Business School Scholars.  Range from 2/3 to full tuition.  Intended for students interested in majoring in business who have outstanding records of academic achievement, who possess extraordinary personal qualities, and who have made significant contributions to their class, their school, and their community.  Nomination Deadline: November 1st.

13.Randolph College in Virginia.  Presidential Scholarships.  Merit Awards/Need Based Grants.  The Presidential Scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership qualities.  Nomination Deadline:  November 1st.

14.Ron Brown Scholarship $10,000 annually. Deadline: November 1st.
15.Scripps The Women’s College Claremont New Generation Scholarship.  Merit based, the scholarship provides full tuition, room, board, three roundtrip airfares home each academic year, and funding for one summer research program.  Deadline:  November 1st.

16.Colby College.  The Ralph J. Bunche Scholars Program.  For Outstanding Students of Color.  Recognizes students of color with demonstrated scholastic strength and leadership potential.  Nominations Deadline:  November 15th or January 1st.

17.Hispanic Heritage Foundation and Colgate-Palmolive.  16 awards – (1) $10,000 Educational Grant and (15) $1,000.  Encouraging young Hispanics to “HAZ LA U” (MAKE THE U).   Apply at www.colgate.com/hazlay .  Deadline:  November 30th.

18.Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship.  Applicants will compete for 18 top awards ranging from $8,000-$60,000 in scholarships.  482 runner-ups will receive $4,000 in scholarships.  Deadline:  January 2nd.

19.University of Virginia Jefferson Scholars Foundation.  Only 1 Nominee for each school.  Four year merit-based scholarship $20,173.  Please see your counselor if interested.  Nomination Deadline:  November 2nd.

20.Louisiana State University (LSU) LA-Stem Research Scholars   Program.  Students pursuing a degree in the STEM discipline with a GPA of 3.5 or higher with an SAT score of 1000 and above or and ACT score of 24 or above.  Deadline for nominations is November 15th and applications are due by December 15th.

21.The John Montgomery Belk Scholarship Program at Davidson College.  Up to ten Belk Scholars are selected in every entering class.  Full scholarship including room and board $45,030 plus two summer stipends $3,000 each.  Nomination Deadline: November 15th.

22.Boston University.   Full tuition. Trustee Scholars Program.  Deadline: December 1st.

23.Cincinnatus Scholarship Program.   $2,000 – Full tuition.  Student must have a minimum 3.2 unweighted GPA.  Deadline: December 1st.

24.KFC Colonel’s Scholars.  Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board.  Need based with a minimum 2.75 GPA.  Online scholarships application available at www.kfcscholars.org from December 1st – February 10th.

25.Comcast Leaders & Achievers Scholarship Program.  Only 1 Nominee for each school.  Student must demonstrate a strong commitment to community service and display leadership abilities in school activities or through work experience and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher.  Please see your counselor if interested.  Deadline:  December 11th.

26.AXA Achievement Scholarship.  Outstanding achievement accomplished at a Community Service Site or Workplace - $25,000 or $10,000.  Apply at www.axa-achievement.com .Deadline: December 15th.

27.Frederick Douglas Memorial & Historical Association, Inc. Scholarship.  Essay on “What Is The Relevance of Frederick Douglass’ Legacy in the 21st Century?” Deadline December 15th.

28.Northeastern University Torch Scholars Program.  An innovative support program for 1st generation college students.  Includes full tuition, room, and board for a Summer Immersion Program and eight subsequent semesters of study at Northwestern University.  Nomination Deadline:  December 15th.

29.TD Bank American Dream Scholarship.  225 scholarships for $1,000.  Minimum 3.0 GPA requirement.  Deadline:  December 15th.

30.University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  Various scholar programs.  Selected scholars will receive awards ranging from $5,000- $22,000 per year.  Deadline:  January 1st-15th.

31.Dell Scholars Program.  $20,000 scholarship over the course of 6 six years.  In addition, the Dell Scholars Program provides its students with technology, a private scholar networking community, resources, and mentoring to ensure they have the support they need to obtain a college degree.  Requirements:  Minimum 2.4 GPA and demonstrate need for financial assistance.  Must apply online at http://www.dellscholars.org/public/HowToApply.aspx .  Opens:  November 1st. / Deadline:  January 15th.

32.Fairleigh Dickinson University Metropolitan Bergen Scholar Award.  Full-tuition scholarship program.  Intended for high achieving students with a minimum 3.5 GPA or higher; rank in the top 10% of their class; score a minimum of 1300 on SAT (Math &Verbal); and apply as a resident student at Metropolitan Campus.  Deadline:  January 15th. 

33.Gates Millennium Scholarship must have attained a cumulative un-weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.  Apply online at http://www.gmsp.org/ .  Deadline: January 11th.

34.Ithaca College Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Program.  Receive up to full tuition in aid, with a minimum merit-based scholarship of $18,000.  Visit www.ithaca.edu/mlk for additional information.  Deadline: January 15th.

35.Ithaca College – Roy H. Park School of Communication Scholarship.  $43,840 annually. Intended for students with a passion for communications, commitment to service, and excellence in academics. Visit www.ithaca.edu/parkscholars  for additional information.  Deadline: January 15th

36.Skidmore College Filene Music Scholarship.  $10,000 annually.  Intended for students interested in pursuing a liberal arts education at Skidmore.  Preliminary Round Deadline:  January 15th.

37.Skidmore College Porter Presidential Scholarships in Mathematics and Science.  $10,000 annually.  Intended for students interested in pursuing a degree in science or mathematics. Deadline:  January 15th.

38.Harvey Mudd College President’s Scholars Program.  Full Tuition.  Created expressly for individuals who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, an exceptional sense of responsibility and self-reliance, and who will help advance the college’s diversity efforts.  Deadline:  January 25th.

39.Wal-Mart – Sam Walton Community Scholarship.  Applicant must have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4-point un-weighted scale, have taken either the ACT or SAT tests and be a high school/home school senior.  Recipients will receive up to $3,000 in a one-time payment, applied to undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board for the 2009-10 academic year. 40.National Commission for Cooperative Education Scholarship Program.  GPA 3.5.  (10) NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities will award 200 Merit Scholarship $6,000.  Visit www.co-op.edu to complete online application.  Deadline: February 15th.

41.Iowa State University Special Awards for Washington, D.C. Residents.  Level I $28,000 / Level II $22,000 annually.  Intended for student who rank in the top 25% of their graduating class, present a superior overall academic that includes a challenging college prep curriculum, or are children or grandchildren of Iowa State alumni.  Deadline:  March 1st.

42.WRTC – Legacy of Life Scholarship.  1st Place - $5,000 Scholarship; 2nd Place - $3,000 Scholarship; 3rd Place - $1,000 Scholarship.  “Organ & Tissue Donation:  Persuade Someone to Give the Gift of a Lifetime”:  Write a 1,000 word persuasive argument on the topic, fiction or nonfiction, with sources sited.  Deadline:  March 31st.

43.2010 Scholarship for Architecture Students.  $2,500 annually up to 5 years.  For intended architecture majors only.  Deadline:  April 16th.

ESSAY CONTEST OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADES 9-12

1.I Am What I Learn.  In two minutes or less, America's students have an opportunity to show the nation and the world how far education can take them and how they will achieve their dreams.  U.S. Department of Education is asking students to respond by participating in a national video contest titled “I Am What I Learn.” Deadline:  November 2nd.

2.The Violet Richardson Award Honoring Young Women for Volunteer Action.  (28) $1.000 Awards and (1) $2,500 Finalist Award.  This award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as:  fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty.  Deadline:  December 1st.  

3.John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest.  1st Place $5,000; 2nd Place $1,000; 3rd Place $500.  All students must register online at www.jfklibrary.org .  Deadline: January 9th.
